Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy of soft tissues
If a lump, nodule, or other abnormal formation is found beneath the skin or within the soft tissues, the doctor may recommend a fine-needle aspiration biopsy to obtain material for cytological examination and clarify the nature of the detected changes. During the procedure, a thin needle is inserted directly into the formation under ultrasound guidance to collect cellular material for further analysis. Ultrasound allows the doctor to visualize the formation in real time and accurately target the area selected for aspiration.
What changes in a soft tissue mass should not be ignored?
You should see a doctor if the mass:
- is increasing in size, especially if the growth is noticeable over a short period of time;
- is larger than 5 cm;
- is located deep within the tissues, rather than superficially beneath the skin;
- becomes firmer or less mobile in relation to the surrounding tissues;
- is associated with persistent pain or other new sensations;
- changes after an injury but does not decrease over time;
- reappears after previous removal.
These signs do not establish a diagnosis on their own. However, they may indicate that the mass requires further evaluation. Depending on its location and characteristics, the doctor may recommend a consultation with a surgeon, soft tissue ultrasound, other imaging methods, or collection of material for further examination.
If further evaluation is needed to assess the cellular composition of the mass, an ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy may be recommended. The further diagnostic approach is determined individually.

If you have only noticed a lump, nodule, or area of thickening, it is reasonable to start with a consultation with a surgeon. The doctor will assess the mass and determine which investigations may be needed next.
If its location, size, structure, and relationship to the surrounding tissues need to be clarified, the next step may be a soft tissue ultrasound examination.
