The surgeon evaluates the condition of the tissues, the nature and progression of the changes, determines whether additional diagnostic testing is required, and develops an appropriate treatment plan. When indicated, the consultation may be the first step toward a procedure or surgical intervention; in other cases, it may help determine that conservative treatment and observation are the most appropriate approach.
When is a surgical consultation needed?
- Pain, swelling, or redness – especially when symptoms worsen, persist, or appear without an obvious cause.
- A lump or mass – if it is growing, changing, repeatedly becoming inflamed, or being regularly traumatized.
- A wound that is slow to heal – when discharge, bleeding, pain, or separation of the wound edges persists.
- Injury-related symptoms – persistent pain, swelling, hematoma, limited mobility, or other changes after an impact or fall.
- An ingrown toenail – when there is pain, inflammation, discharge, or recurrent ingrowth after previous treatment.
- A core corn – if it causes pain while walking, does not resolve, or repeatedly develops in the same area.
- A postoperative wound – when pain, swelling, redness, discharge, or separation of the wound edges increases.
- The need for wound dressing – when the condition of the wound needs to be assessed to determine whether a simple dressing or more extensive wound care is required.
- The need for a procedure – when it is necessary to determine whether aspiration, lesion removal, partial nail resection, or another surgical procedure is indicated.
- Skin and soft tissue inflammation or infection – painful redness, localized swelling or induration, increased skin temperature, or the appearance of purulent discharge.

How to prepare for a surgical consultation?
No special preparation is usually required. However, the consultation will be more informative if you can briefly describe the problem in advance: when it started, how it has changed, what triggers or relieves the symptoms, and what treatment you have already received.
If the problem is related to an injury, tell the doctor when and how it occurred. For postoperative concerns, provide the date and type of the procedure. If you have previously had ultrasound, X-rays, blood tests, CT, MRI, or other diagnostic tests, bring the results with you.
Also inform the doctor about any regular medications, allergic reactions, and previous surgeries. If you have already used ointments, antiseptics, dressings, or other treatments for the affected area, mention them during the consultation.
If you are consulting a surgeon about a wound, swelling, or another localized problem, do not change your treatment immediately before the appointment unless advised to do so. It is important for the doctor to assess the actual condition of the tissues and evaluate how the problem has changed over time.
