What can and cannot be determined by fine-needle aspiration biopsy of a lymph node?
An ultrasound examination of the lymph nodes can assess their size, shape, internal structure, and other features. However, even when changes are detected on ultrasound, their cause cannot always be determined from the image alone. In some cases, the next step may therefore be an ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy.
During FNAB, cellular material is collected from the lymph node and sent for cytological examination. This makes it possible to assess the cells present in the sample and obtain additional information about the nature of the detected changes.
At the same time, FNAB cannot answer every diagnostic question. For certain diseases, assessing the tissue structure of the lymph node is important. If the collected material is insufficient or the result requires further clarification, the doctor may recommend additional tests or another type of biopsy.
