How to prepare for minor surgery under local anaesthesia
Preparing for surgery under local anaesthesia is usually different from preparing for a procedure under general anaesthesia. In many cases, you do not need to fast or restrict fluids, although the specific instructions depend on the planned procedure.
Particular attention should be paid to any medications you take regularly. Before the procedure, it is important to tell the surgeon about all medications, including those that affect blood clotting. Do not stop taking prescribed medication or change the dosage on your own – this decision should be made based on why the medication was prescribed and the nature of the planned procedure. During a surgeon consultation, you can clarify in advance which medications should be continued as usual and whether any require specific instructions.
On the day of surgery, it is best to wear comfortable clothing that will not put pressure on the treatment area and allows easy access to it. If the procedure is performed on an arm, leg, or another area that may need to be protected from friction afterwards, it is also worth considering what clothing will be most comfortable during the first few days of recovery.
There is no need to shave or intensively treat the skin in the area. Irritation, cuts, or a rash may complicate preparation for the procedure. If you develop cold symptoms, a fever, a rash, or inflammation in the area where the surgery is planned, it is important to inform the medical centre in advance.
