How does a consultation with a pediatric surgeon work?

Medical history and symptom assessment

The consultation begins with a detailed discussion of your child's symptoms, when they first appeared, how they have changed over time, and whether there have been any injuries, previous surgeries, or chronic medical conditions. If your child has already undergone examinations, it is recommended to bring previous medical records, laboratory test results, ultrasound reports, imaging studies, and consultation notes from other specialists. During the examination, the pediatric surgeon evaluates your child's overall condition and carefully examines the area of concern. The doctor checks for hernias, soft tissue masses, skin lesions, inflammatory conditions, injuries, and other abnormalities.

When clinically indicated, the examination may also include an assessment of:

• postoperative scars;
• wounds and the healing process;
• joints and limbs following injuries;
• fingers and nails in cases of an ingrown toenail;

Individual treatment plan

At the end of the consultation, the pediatric surgeon explains the findings, answers parents' questions, and provides clear recommendations regarding the next steps. Depending on the diagnosis, the treatment plan may include:

• observation and follow-up;
• conservative treatment;
• an outpatient surgical procedure;
• referral for additional diagnostic tests;
• planned surgical treatment, when clinically indicated.

The surgeon also explains which symptoms require a follow-up appointment or immediate medical attention.

If your child's condition allows and there are no contraindications, many outpatient surgical procedures can be performed immediately after the consultation. These include:

• treatment of an ingrown toenail;
• partial nail plate resection;
• drainage of a felon, paronychia, or furuncle;

If you have previous ultrasound reports, laboratory test results, X-rays, or consultation notes from other specialists, please bring them to your appointment. This enables the pediatric surgeon to evaluate your child's condition comprehensively and, whenever possible, determine the most appropriate treatment plan during the first consultation.

Is surgery always necessary for a child?

Surgery is only one of the possible treatment options and is not the solution for every condition evaluated by a pediatric surgeon. In many cases, a child's condition can be managed with observation, regular follow-up, or treatment without the need for surgery.

During the consultation, the pediatric surgeon carefully evaluates the child's symptoms, age, medical history, physical examination findings, and, when necessary, the results of additional diagnostic tests. Based on this comprehensive assessment and current evidence-based medical guidelines, the most appropriate treatment plan is determined.
