Application of an immobilization dressing

Movement of an injured area after trauma can increase pain and cause further damage to the tissues. An immobilization dressing helps stabilize a limb or joint in the required position and temporarily restrict movement when this is necessary based on the nature of the injury. This type of immobilization may be used after injuries, ligament and soft tissue damage, dislocations, as well as after certain surgical procedures. The type of dressing, the area to be immobilized, and the duration of immobilization are determined by the doctor based on the specific injury.

FAQ

When might immobilization be needed after an injury?

It may be used when movement of the injured area could worsen the injury, increase pain, or interfere with tissue recovery. The need for immobilization is determined after assessing the nature of the injury.

An immobilization dressing may be used:

- After a sprain or ligament injury, when a joint requires temporary stabilization.

- In certain dislocations, after reduction to limit movement in the injured area.

- For soft tissue injuries, when movement causes pain or contributes to repeated trauma.

- For injuries to the fingers, hand, or wrist, when a specific area needs to be stabilized.

- After certain surgical procedures, when movement or weight-bearing needs to be temporarily restricted.

- As part of initial care when a fracture is suspected, before the necessary diagnostic tests are performed and further treatment is determined.

Depending on the situation, a consultation with a surgeon may be needed, while injuries involving bones or joints may require further diagnostics. The type of immobilization should correspond to the specific injury rather.

Can an immobilization dressing be removed without medical advice?

This depends on the type of dressing and the reason it was applied. Some forms of immobilization may be removed temporarily, for example, for hygiene purposes. Others should not be removed or loosened without a doctor's recommendation, as this may compromise the necessary stabilization of the injured area.

You should not change the immobilization method on your own simply because the pain has decreased. A reduction in pain does not always mean that the injured tissues have recovered sufficiently to tolerate full movement or weight-bearing.

If the dressing causes pressure or rubbing, becomes too tight because of swelling, or no longer provides adequate stabilization, it should be reassessed. Numbness, significant coldness, or changes in the colour of the fingers are also reasons not to wait for a scheduled follow-up and to seek medical attention.

Registration for the procedure

At Doctor Sam, you can seek medical attention after an injury to assess the damage and determine whether immobilization is necessary. The doctor will consider the location of the injury, the nature of the pain, and the range of motion and, if necessary, refer you for an X-ray or other appropriate diagnostic examination. If stabilization is required, an appropriate method of immobilization will be selected, and you will receive clear guidance on what to do next.
