What can an abdominal ultrasound detect?
An abdominal ultrasound allows the physician to evaluate the condition of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen, helping detect a wide range of abnormalities, often before significant symptoms develop. It is one of the first-line diagnostic examinations for abdominal pain, digestive disorders, abnormal laboratory test results, or suspected diseases of the abdominal organs.
During the examination, the physician may identify:
- fatty liver disease (hepatic steatosis), signs of hepatitis, cirrhosis, and other diffuse liver abnormalities;
- gallstones, gallbladder polyps, anatomical variations, bile sludge, and signs of acute or chronic cholecystitis;
- inflammatory changes of the pancreas, signs of pancreatitis, pancreatic cysts, and other structural abnormalities;
- an enlarged spleen, changes in splenic structure, cysts, or focal lesions;
- benign and malignant tumors, cysts, calcifications, and other focal abnormalities;
- enlargement of abdominal organs, changes in their shape, echogenicity, and internal structure;
- free fluid within the abdominal cavity and other pathological findings.
If necessary, your physician may recommend a consultation with an adult gastroenterologist or a pediatric gastroenterologist.
