What to expect at a breast specialist appointment

Many women put off seeing a breast specialist simply because they do not know what to expect. In reality, the appointment is straightforward and takes around 30–40 minutes.

The consultation begins with a conversation. The doctor asks about your symptoms, menstrual cycle, reproductive history, any hormonal medications you are taking, and family history. This information helps build a complete clinical picture before the physical examination. The doctor then performs a visual assessment and palpation of the breasts and lymph nodes – both standing and lying down – evaluating symmetry, skin condition, the presence of any lumps, and tissue characteristics.

If needed, the specialist will refer you for a breast ultrasound – at Doctor Sam, this can be done within the same visit, with no need for a separate appointment. Following the examination, you will receive a clear conclusion: if everything is fine – guidance on self-examination and the date of your next visit; if any changes are detected – a specific plan of action.

For the most accurate results, it is best to schedule your visit on days 6–12 of your menstrual cycle, when breast tissue is least swollen. If you have any concerning symptoms, come in straight away – regardless of where you are in your cycle.

FAQ

When to see a breast specialist and how often

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Ukraine. And at the same time, one where early diagnosis dramatically changes outcomes: detected at stage one, it is curable in over 95% of cases. This is why an annual preventive check-up with a breast specialist from the age of 18 is a basic standard of self-care. If cysts, fibrocystic breast changes or hormonal irregularities have already been identified, the doctor will determine an individual monitoring schedule.

Do not delay your visit if you notice: a lump or nodular formation in the breast, nipple discharge, a change in the shape or size of the breast, nipple retraction, skin redness or swelling, or pain and heaviness unrelated to the menstrual cycle. It is important to understand: most such changes turn out to be benign – but only a specialist can confirm that.

After the age of 40, a breast consultation is complemented by mammography – this is the method that detects microcalcifications and early structural changes that ultrasound may not reveal. Under 40, ultrasound is the primary diagnostic tool, as it works well with the denser tissue of a younger breast. Where there is a family history of breast cancer, the examination schedule is tailored individually.

A breast specialist consultation is also recommended when planning a pregnancy, during breastfeeding, while taking hormonal medications or contraceptives, with menstrual cycle irregularities, and in cases of thyroid or ovarian conditions. Hormonal balance directly affects breast tissue – and an experienced specialist always evaluates these connections as part of the full clinical picture.
