Why is vaccination one of the most effective ways to protect your child?

Vaccination helps build immunity before a child is exposed to an infectious disease. After a vaccine is administered, the immune system develops a targeted immune response against the specific pathogen, significantly reducing the risk of infection, severe illness, hospitalization, and serious complications.

Timely childhood vaccination according to the National Immunization Schedule of Ukraine protects children against diseases such as measles, pertussis (whooping cough), diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) infection, and tuberculosis. When indicated, children may also receive vaccines against meningococcal disease, pneumococcal disease, rotavirus infection, chickenpox (varicella), influenza, human papillomavirus (HPV), and other vaccine-preventable diseases.

If your child has missed one or more scheduled vaccinations, it does not mean the vaccination series must be restarted. Routine childhood vaccination remains one of the most effective strategies for preventing infectious diseases. What reactions after vaccination are considered normal?

The most common reactions after vaccination include:

• redness, swelling, or a small lump at the injection site;
• tenderness where the vaccine was given;
• a mild fever;
• sleepiness or increased irritability;
• a temporary decrease in appetite;
• mild fatigue or reduced activity.

These symptoms usually appear within the first 24–48 hours after vaccination and resolve within 1–3 days.

You should consult a pediatrician if:

• the fever lasts longer than three days or is difficult to control;
• redness or swelling at the injection site continues to increase;
• your child refuses to drink, is unusually sleepy, or extremely lethargic;
• seizures, difficulty breathing, a widespread rash, or any other unusual symptoms develop.

At what age should children be vaccinated?

Childhood vaccination begins at birth. Each vaccine has a recommended age of administration according to the National Immunization Schedule of Ukraine. Following this schedule helps ensure that children develop immunity before they are exposed to potentially serious infectious diseases. The first vaccines are given shortly after birth. During the first year of life, children receive most of their routine immunizations against tuberculosis, hepatitis B, pertussis, diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), and other serious infections. Booster doses are administered during the preschool and school years to maintain immunity, while additional vaccines, such as the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, may be recommended during adolescence.

If vaccination has been delayed or missed, it is usually not necessary to restart the vaccination series.
