Breast self-examination at home: a step-by-step guide

Breast self-examination at home: a step-by-step guide

Breast self-examination is a basic method of monitoring breast health that is available to every woman. While regular self-checks are not a substitute for professional consultations or diagnostic imaging, they play a crucial role in the early detection of changes that may require medical attention.

In this article, the breast specialists (mammologists) at Doctor Sam Medical Center share professional recommendations on how to perform a proper self-examination and recognize important warning signs.

When should you perform a breast self-examination?

For the most accurate results, a breast self-examination should be performed between the 7th and 10th day of the menstrual cycle. During this period, breast tissue is less sensitive and not affected by hormonal swelling. For women who no longer have regular menstrual cycles, it is recommended to choose one fixed day each month for the examination.

Step-by-step examination

Step 1: visual inspection

Stand undressed from the waist up in front of a mirror under good lighting. Observe your breasts in three different positions:

  1. Arms relaxed at your sides.
  2. Arms raised behind your head.
  3. Hands pressed firmly on your hips while slightly tightening the chest muscles.

What to look for: the presence of asymmetry, changes in contour, skin or nipple retraction, the appearance of a rash, redness, or areas resembling an “orange peel” texture.

Step 2: palpation of breast tissue

This examination is often easiest to perform while taking a shower, as soapy skin allows the fingers to glide more smoothly and improves sensitivity.

  1. Technique: raise one arm and use the pads of three joined fingers on the opposite hand to carefully examine the breast tissue.
  2. Important: use gentle circular movements, pressing the tissue against the chest wall. Avoid pinching the breast tissue between your fingers, as this can create a false sensation of lumps where none actually exist.

Step 3: check the underarm area

Since part of the breast tissue extends into the underarm area, this step is mandatory. Make sure there are no firm nodules, enlarged lymph nodes, or discomfort in this area.

Step 4: examine the nipples

Gently press the nipple to check for any discharge. If you are not pregnant and are not breastfeeding, any fluid discharge (especially bloody or amber-colored) is a reason for urgent diagnostic evaluation. Also pay attention to any new nipple retraction or scaling of the nipple.

Step 5: examination while lying down

Lie on your back and place a small pillow under the shoulder on the side being examined. In this position, the breast tissue spreads more evenly across the chest wall, allowing for a more thorough examination of deeper structures.

When should you schedule an appointment with a breast specialist?

Most breast lumps are benign conditions such as cysts or fibroadenomas. However, only a qualified healthcare professional can make an accurate diagnosis. Contact Doctor Sam Medical Center if you notice:

  • breast pain or discomfort;
  • any new lump or nodule;
  • changes in the shape, size, or symmetry of the breasts;
  • nipple discharge;
  • changes in the skin or localized swelling.

It is important to remember that self-examination is an effective method of self-monitoring, but it does not replace annual professional examinations. Modern equipment at Doctor Sam can detect pathological processes at a stage when they have no external manifestations.

If you notice lumps, changes in breast shape, or nipple discharge, do not delay. Timely diagnosis is your confidence in the future.
